It modifies the AppleWorks 2.0 and 2.1 programs to recognize OMand use the additional memory provided by these products. Also contained on MKthe AW 2 Expander disk are several test programs you can run to verify the Koperation of your memory expansion card(s)-- RamFactor, RamWorks, GS-RAM,RamExpress, and Z-RAM Ultra.OMThe AW 2 Expander program is designed to enhance only AppleWorks 2.0 and 2.1 OMwhen used on a IIGS, //e or //c and is very different from the Super Desktop MKExpander program. The Super Desktop Expander will enhance only AppleWorks NLversions 1.0 through 1.3. The AW 2 Expander will also patch AppleWorks 1.2 MKthrough 2.1 so that it will run on an Apple ][ Plus. (][ Plus users refer ECto the section, "AW 2 Expander for the ][ Plus," in the manual for instructions.)?AppleWorks enhancements created by the AW 2 Expander include:< o Increased Desktop Size (for RamWorks & Z-RAM products)B o Up to 22,500 records in the Data Base (versus 6350 records)C o Up to 22,500 lines in the Word Processor (versus 7250 lines)JH o Word Processor and Data Base Clipboard expanded to 2,042 lines (versus 250)* o Multiple disk file-saving capability6 o Printer Buffer (for RamWorks and Z-RAM products) o Print-file cache# o Buffer size option (for IIGS)HF o Reserve RamFactor size for use as a RAMdisk (for RamFactor and PC CATransporter -- see note for RamWorks/Z-RAM in the "About the New Features" section)7 o On-screen time display option (with ProDOS clock)@ o Data Base time-stamp capability option (with ProDOS clock)F o Expander options menu (accessible whenever AppleWorks is booted)2Before you even think of modifying AppleWorks...2------------------------------------------------NLIf you are familiar with AppleWorks, you will probably be tempted to use AW MK2 Expander without reading these instructions. Resist the temptation. Or at least read this section.LJAW 2 Expander will enlarge the desktop and increase the maximum number of KIlines and records when used on a //e or IIGS with AppleWorks 2.0 and 2.1 MKonly. It will add only the ][ Plus enhancements when used on versions 1.2 HFor 1.3. (See ][ Plus section in the manual for list of ][ Plus patch NLfeatures.) If you are unsure what version of AppleWorks you have, refer to >the illustration in the manual, "AppleWorks Version Number."NLIf you own a RamWorks or Z-RAM and want to enlarge the desktop and increase OMthe maximum number of records and lines of version 1.0 through 1.3, you will MKneed the Super Desktop Expander program available from Applied Engineering sales.JHIf you own a RamFactor and want to enlarge the desktop and increase the HFmaximum number of records and lines of version 1.3, you will need the FRamFactor Expander program available from Applied Engineering sales.NLThese instructions assume that you already know how to use AppleWorks. The IGAW 2 Expander program uses the same screen displays and keyboard input NLroutines ("user interface") as the AppleWorks program. If you need a quick Ireview, read "Throughout AppleWorks" in your "Using AppleWorks" manual.GEThere is an AppleWorks Word-Processor file on the AW 2 Expander disk MKentitled "READ.ME." Please do so. This document will contain information Kabout any recent changes to the software or updates to the documentation.HFIf you plan to use the Printer Buffer option, you must have a printer MKinterface which supports Apple's Pascal 1.1 protocol for status-checking. KI(Most newer interfaces do support this standard.) For more information, OMplease refer to Printer Buffer Option in the section entitled "About the New NLFeatures." If you are having problems getting this to work, please contact LJthe printer card manufacturer, as we cannot tell you if your printer card *supports these Apple Computer Standards.LJApply the AW 2 Expander modifications only to unmodified BACKUP copies of NLyour AppleWorks Startup and Program disks. Modifications required by other Iprograms should be done after executing the AW 2 Expander enhancements.JHNote: The Time & Date display feature is built into the AW 2 Expander. ECTherefore, do not apply any AppleWorks clock modifications you may B@have with your clock card (ex: the 'ClockWorks' that comes with IGTimeMaster HO, Serial pro, Z-Ram Ultra, etc.). If your clock requires FDa driver to inform ProDOS that there is a clock in the machine, you #still need to install the driver.Enhancing AppleWorks 2.0:-------------------------LJAppleWorks expansion is a two part process. First, you will use the AW 2 IGExpander utility to modify some of the program files on the AppleWorks OMstartup and program disks. Then, you will boot the modified AppleWorks disk OMand add or change the limits on the enhanced features by accessing a special options menu.)Part 1 - Modifying the AppleWorks disksIG1. First, make copies of your original AppleWorks disk(s) and the AW 2 Expander disk. OMFiler (provided on the AW 2 Expander disk) or the System Utilities should be used for this purpose.H IMPORTANT! Use the same name for both the front and back sides( of the backup disk.C2. Boot the copy of the AW 2 Expander disk in your startup drive.:3. Select the option, "Execute AppleWorks Enhancements."LJThe Applied Engineering AW 2 Expander copyright screen will then appear. JHRead each of the screens, pressing the space bar to continue, until you $reach the "Modify Startup" screen.HF4. Remove the AW 2 Expander disk and insert a copy of the AppleWorks (STARTUP disk in drive one as prompted.MKBe sure the WRITE PROTECT tab has been removed from the disk. As prompted NLat the bottom of the display screen, press the space bar to continue or the &ESC key to go back to the main menu.IGThe AW 2 Expander program expects to find the AppleWorks Startup file, MK"APLWORKS.SYSTEM," on the disk in the drive you booted the Expander from. JIf, at this point, the program beeps and displays the following message::Unable to find file. Type prefix of AppleWorks to modify/MKtype the pathname (the leading slash is provided) of where your AppleWorks NLstartup files are located. If you have copied the AppleWorks program to be MKmodified into a subdirectory, enter the complete ProDOS pathname. Be sure NLto include any slashes (/) for subdirectories. An example ProDOS prefix of MKan AppleWorks subdirectory on a Profile hard disk (with a volume directory KIname of /PROFILE) might be: /PROFILE/APPLEWORKS. If modifying a direct Icopy of AppleWorks on 3.5 or 5.25, type "AppleWorks" after the slash. 5. Press "Y"NLWhen the program finds the AppleWorks disk, it will automatically determine HFwhich version it is, 1.2, 1.3, 2.0, or 2.1, and display a list of the MKmodifications it will make. Pressing "Y" in response to the question, "Do JHyou wish to continue?" will begin the modifications. Pressing "N" will return you to the main menu.D6. The message, "Working" will appear at the bottom of the screen..The modifications will be made very quickly.57. Insert the PROGRAM disk and press the space bar.NLAfter the Startup disk has been successfully modified, you will be prompted LJto remove it from the disk drive and insert a copy (write enabled) of the LJAppleWorks Program disk--unless all of the AppleWorks startup and program MKfiles are contained in the same directory (i.e. Disk 3.5, ROM disk or hard NLdisk). If the program and startup files are on the same directory, no disk MKswapping is necessary. The volume directory name of this disk must be the =same as the Startup disk. Press the space bar to continue.8. Boot the modified disk.OMWhen the modification to the AppleWorks PROGRAM disk has been completed, the message:9 Modification Successfully CompletedKIappears on the screen. The program will beep the computer's speaker and JHexit to the ProDOS Quit code. The modified AppleWorks disks can now be booted in the normal manner. NLNote: The modified AppleWorks startup screen will now show an "A" appended HFto the version number (ex: V2.1A). (If you used the ][ Plus patch, a FD"+" will be appended to the version number instead of an "A.") See $the illustration on the next page.9. Make other modifications.NLAny modifications required by other AppleWorks accessory programs should be MKdone at this time. (You may wish to make a archive copies of the modified 5AppleWorks disks prior to any other modifications.)10. Copy to hard disk.LJIf you will be using the modified AppleWorks from a hard disk drive, copy OMthe modified AppleWorks files to the hard disk according to the instructions 7provided with your hard disk file management program.H11. Load AppleWorks onto your RamFactor, PC Transporter or RamExpress.KI Note: If you plan on 'BOOTING' AppleWorks from your RAM disk, make sure HFthat you FORMAT it first. Remember, you must treat the RamFactor, PC 7Transporter or Ram Express like any other disk drive.@If you want to load AppleWorks onto your RAM disk, here's how:' Select Filer from the disk menu.! Select File Commands ("F") Select Copy Files ("C")F Type in the AppleWorks disk pathname followed by an equal sign PN (ex: /AppleWorks/=). The equal sign is a wildcard command meaning, "copy all files."G Type in the Pathname for your RAM disk followed by an equal sign (ex: /Ram7/=). Press the "Return" key.D A list of the files being copied will appear on the screen.= You will then get a message saying 'Copy is complete'.JHYou must make sure that you copy the program side of the disk as well. LJOtherwise when you boot AppleWorks, it will stop at the 'Place AppleWorks 4program disk in Drive 1 and Press Return' message.MKThe next very important step, explained in Part 2 of this procedure, is to MKaccess the enhanced AppleWorks' Getting Started options menu and configure Fthe program disk's parameter file with the desired expander options.1Part 2 - Set the AppleWorks enhancement optionsE1. Boot the AppleWorks startup disk just like you normally would. EC (Notice that the Expander has appended an "A" (or a "+") to the GEAppleWorks version number near the lower right corner of the startup screen.OM2. Remove the startup disk and insert the program disk when the startup disk DBhas finished loading. DO NOT press return. Press the ESCape key instead. KIIf you boot AppleWorks from a Disk 3.5 or a hard disk, press the ESC key @when you are prompted with: "Press the Space Bar to continue."NLNote: You do not need to access the Getting Started options menu each time CAyou boot AppleWorks. Use the Getting Started menu to modify the #enhanced AppleWorks options only.FDThe current enhancement options configuration will be read from the NLparameter file (SEG.PR) on the AppleWorks program disk and displayed in the LJGetting Started option menu. The default settings remain in effect until HFyou change them and save the new configuration back to the AppleWorks program disk. MK3. Use the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys to highlight the option you want. 4Use the Return key to select a highlighted option.MKFor more information on the options, refer to the section entitled, "About #the New Features," in the manual.GE4. Save the new configuration back to the AppleWorks program disk by KIselecting the menu option, "Save Configuration," after you have made the desired changes.KI5. Choose the option, "Continue with AppleWorks" to continue booting the AppleWorks program.LJIf you did not save your new configuration, the new one will be in effect FDonly until you quit the AppleWorks program. The next time you boot =AppleWorks, it will use the previous (saved) configuration.)For Information About the New Features:)---------------------------------------CAFor a full description of the new features, refer to the printed 4instructions included with the AW 2 Expander disk.#AppleWorks for the Apple ][ Plus!#---------------------------------MKIf you want to run AppleWorks on an Apple ][ Plus, the AW 2 Expander makes OMit possible. The ][ Plus enhancements also add certain features to versions KI1.2 and 1.3 when run on a ][ Plus, //e or IIGS. Refer to the manual for instructions.Bird's Better 'Bye'By Alan Bird of 'The SoftWare Touch'(619) 549 3091 KI The AppleWorks 2 Expander disk contains a modified version of Apple NLComputer's ProDOS. It incorporates an improved 'BYE' command that lets you MKexit one System program and easily run another System program from a menu. .(e.g. APLWORKS.SYSTEM, BASIC.SYSTEM, FILER).KI To use this 'BYE' command, copy the 'PRODOS' file from this disk to ECyour boot disks. Then, anytime you quit a system program (such as NLAppleWorks), a menu of all the executable System files on that disk will be LJdisplayed on the screen. This menu can also be called from the Applesoft -BASIC prompt by entering the 'BYE' command. Sample screen display:. ESC: CHANGE VOLUME. RETURN: SELECT FILE /AW2.EXP PRODOS" AE.AW.SYSTEM# GSTEST.SYSTEM# RWTEST.SYSTEM# RFTEST.SYSTEMLJ Use the up and down arrows to change the highlighted selection. The OMEsc key will change the volume (disk) selection to the next on-line volume. MThe Return key selects the currently highlighted file or subdirectory name.IGSubdirectory names on the disk will be indicated by a '/' as the first character of the file name. 7 GS/OS Driver For RamKeeperJHA GS/OS driver for RamKeeper is included in the 3.5" version of the AW2 NLExpander Disk. This driver will replace the existing Smartport driver when MKRamKeeper is used with GS/OS. The advantage is less overhead when reading LJand writing blocks to RamKeeper. This results in about a 20% increase in FDspeed of the RamKeeper disk. Note: If the driver finds more than 8 LJMegabytes of memory, it will not be installed due to a problem between it and the RamKeeper.LJTo install the driver you must simply copy the file RAMKEEPER on the 3.5" MKversion of the AW2 Expander disk to your GS/OS boot volume and place it in NLthe folder SYSTEM/DRIVERS. To do this you can use the GS/OS Finder, or the OMFiler (included in the AW2 Expander Disk), or one of your favorite file copy OMutilities. Once this is done you can reboot your system and the driver will NLbe loaded and installed. You should notice a slight increase in speed when PNaccessing the RamKeeper disk. You must be careful to follow the directions. KIIt is difficult to tell that the driver is actually installed because it runs transparantly.Copyright notice----------------OMThis documentation and the software (computer programs) described herein are JHcopyrighted by Applied Engineering with all rights reserved.
