It really was a good deal (this is the new type of Quantum Fireball ("New MR Head Tech"), quite a bit faster than the old ones) for a 9ms external Quantum drive at $390 for 1080MB from ProDirect (800) 524-9952. This was a special, but I'm pretty sure they'll still have them at this price for a few more months. I'm in no way affiliated with them; I'm simply a satisfied customer. Be sure to tell 'em you have a GS, and order on Fridays! (shipping is free on Fridays). On my 8Mhz/64k GS with an Apple HS SCSI, I can load ProTERM v3.1 w/o initing the modem in about 1-2 seconds (down from about 4-6 for my Vulcan 40MB or SyQuest 44MB Removable SCSI). Sys6.0.1 shift-boots in about 8 sec flat (can't wait to try it on on a RamFAST [hi Kent!] and 12Mhz Zip!). Here are some access times I've measured: Here are some access times of various common storage devices tested on a ROM 01 GS @ 8Mhz/16k (8Mhz/64k) ZipGSX. The SyQuest drive is a 44MB Removable hooked up to an Apple High Speed DMA SCSI card. The Vulcan 40MB is not the Gold version. The Quantum Fireball is a 1080MB drive with a 9ms average seek time.
