ABOUT THE PROGRAM ----------------- FrEdWriter is a full word processor that has been made available as public domain software. It is based on FreeWriter which was written in the U.S.A. by Paul Lutus in March 1984. Paul is the author of many excellent commercial programs including AppleWriter, one of the most popular word processors for the Apple computer. Many thanks must go to him for the basis of this excellent piece of software. FreeWriter was written to provide an easy to use word processor for people who aren't experienced in computer operation. Freewriter, however, had some serious flaws for use in schools by beginning students and teachers. This Educational Version of FreeWriter, now called FrEdWriter, was developed from the original FreeWriter by Al Rogers of the San Diego TEC Centre. For more information on how this disk was developed read the file WELCOME.TO.FRED on the FrEdWriter Tutorial disk. Just for your interest, this documentation has been prepared using FrEdWriter. .PAGE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS ---------------------------------- 1. An APPLE ][, ][+, //e or //c computer with at least 64K of memory, a monitor and a disk drive. Apple ][ and ][+ computers will also need to have a lower case chip installed and have had a SHIFT key modification. If you are using an Apple ][ or ][+ press the SHIFT key whenever the 'Open Apple' key is mentioned in this documentation. To set CAPS lock on an Apple ][ or ][+ press 'Esc' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. 2. Access to a printer that can be connected to your APPLE computer. 3. An Aussie FrEd program disk. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THE AUSSIE FRED DISK ------------------------------------------- LOADING THE WORD PROCESSOR: Place the Aussie FrEd program disk in disk drive one and turn the computer on; or Reboot the system using 'Ctrl, Open Apple, Reset'. After the Aussie FrEd title screen has displayed, a menu of the programs that are on the disk should appear. NOTE: Pressing any key while the program is loading will bypass the Aussie FrEd title screen. Use the Arrow keys to highlight 'FREDWRITER' and press the 'Return' key. If your computer has an 80 column card you will be asked to select which screen format you want (80 or 40 columns). Again use the arrow keys to select and then press 'Return'. The word processor should then load into memory. NOTE: If you are using an Apple //c the 40/80 column switch on the top of the computer must be UP to use 80 column display. The FreeWare title screen will then display. Press any key to remove it and display the FrEdWriter title screen. Again, any key will remove this screen. The 'Hands On' title screen will then appear and may also be removed by pressing a key. When the screen clears to display an inverse line across the top and the flashing cursor you may start to enter text. SEE: TROUBLE SHOOTING section if this doesn't happen. SETTING THE DATE/TIME: It is a good idea to set the date/time each time you reboot Aussie FrEd. The date and time will then be included when you save a file. This makes it is easier to keep track of your files and when they were last modified, if the date and time is included in the disk catalog. To enter the date/time use the Arrow keys to highlight 'Set Date/Time' from the Main Menu and then press 'Return'. The Set Date/Time screen will then appear. Press 'Esc' if you want to return to the Main Menu. You should enter the first three letters of the month, two numerals for the date and the last two numerals for the year. Pressing 'Esc' will allow you to re-enter the date. You should enter the time in 12 hour mode, including AM or PM. The program will convert the time to 24 mode for you. Press 'Esc' to re-enter the time or 'Return' to update the date/time and return to the main menu. NOTE: If you have a time clock connected to your computer the Date/Time will be set automatically. AUSSIE FREDWRITER UTILITIES: The Aussie FrEd disk contains utilities that allow you to format blank disks; copy entire disks; view, lock, unlock, delete, rename and copy files. To use the Aussie FrEd utilities use the arrow keys to highlight 'Utilities' from the Main Menu and press the 'Return' key. The Utilities Menu will then appear. Use the arrow keys again to select the utility that you wish to use and press 'Return' to proceed. FORMATTING A DISK (Creating a data disk): To save your FrEdWriter typing you will need to format a data disk. If you are going to use the Aussie FrEd ProDOS disk copier then you will also need to format a disk first. To do this select 'Format Disk' from the Utilities Menu and press 'Return'. You should enter the slot and drive number of the disk to be formatted (usually slot 6, drive 1 or 2). Type the new volume name for your disk (Eg. /DATA) and press the 'Return' key. NOTE: The volume name is not important if you are using your formatted disk for copying, as the name of your source disk will be included when it is copied. A warning will be displayed to remind you that all information on the disk will be lost forever. You should now press 'Return' to proceed and format the disk, or 'Esc' to cancel. When your disk is successfully formatted you may choose to format another or returned to the Main Menu. REMEMBER: All information on a disk is lost when it is formatted. COPYING A DISK: To copy a disk, either your FrEdWriter disk or any other ProDOS disk, highlight 'Copy Disk' from the Utilities Menu and press 'Return'. REMEMBER: You will need two disk drives and a formatted ProDOS destination disk to copy a disk. Enter the Slot and drive number of the disk to be copied (usually slot 6, drive 1) and the slot and drive number of the copy disk (usually slot 6, drive 2). The volumenames of the source and destination disks will be displayed. You should press 'Y' to proceed, or 'N' to cancel. When your disk has been successfully copied you may choose to copy another disk or return to the Main Menu. USING THE FILE UTILITIES: The FrEdWriter disk contains a file utilities program that allows you to view, lock, unlock, delete, rename and copy files. To use the file utilities highlight 'File Utilities' from the Utilities Menu and press 'Return'. You will then need to select which disk drive contains the files you want work with. To do this highlight 'Drive One' or 'Drive Two' and press 'Return'. Pressing 'Esc' returns you to the Main Menu. The names of the text files that are on the disk will be loaded and displayed. If more than ten files are on the disk 'More' is displayed under the filenames. Use the arrow keys to highlight the file that you want to work with and press 'Return'. Pressing 'Esc' allows you to select a different disk drive or change disks. NOTE: Pressing the Arrow keys while holding down the Open or Closed Apple keys skips 10 files at a time. A window will open to display what can be done to the file. Use the arrow keys again to select the operation you want to perform on the highlighted file and press 'Return'. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. Press 'Esc' to cancel and select another file. NOTE: You will need two disk drives to copy a file using the File Utilities. READING THE INTRODUCTION: The Aussie FrEd disk contains an introduction that descibes how to load this documentation and how to see the FrEdWriter Tutor. To read this you should highlight 'Read Introduction' from the Main Menu and press 'Return'. Press 'Return' to proceed through the screens that are displayed. Pressing 'Esc' returns you to the Main Menu. SEEING THE CREDITS: A lot of hard work has gone into producing the Aussie FrEd word processing package. You may see who was involved in preparing this disk for you by highlighting 'See Credits' from the Main Menu and pressing 'Return'. Press 'Return' to proceed through the screens that are displayed or 'Esc' to return to the Main Menu. THE WORD PROCESSOR ------------------ THE TUTOR: FrEdWriter offers an inbuilt Tutor. Much of the information in this documentation can be found in the Tutor. This offers an excellent introduction to using FrEdWriter for beginner users. It also offers a quick reminder of the control keys used to operate FrEdWriter. To select the Tutor press the letter 'T' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. Press the 'Return' key to go forward through the Tutor and the 'Esc' key to return to your work. LOADING FILES: To load a file from disk into FrEdWriter press 'L' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. You can now enter a filename. By pressing the 'Return' key with no filename you will be returned to your work. By entering a '?' as the filename you may see a catalog of the TEXT type files on any ProDOS disk. You may select which disk drive to look at by adding a comma and the drive number. For example: oad(?=Catalog) :?,d2 will catalog the files on the disk in drive 2. All further loading will be from the disk drive last selected until you catalog another disk or use a ProDOS pathname. You should type the name of the file that you want to load as it appears in the disk catalog. By typing a filename as it appears in the disk catalog and pressing 'Return' the file will be loaded into the computer's memory. SEE: The section on ProDOS filenames if you're not sure what to type. If you understand ProDOS pathnames then you may also use these with FrEdWriter. By typing a filename that starts with a slash (/) FrEdWriter accepts the filename as being a pathname and loads the file. REMEMBER: When you load a file, or part of a file, it is added to what already is in the computer's memory at the position of the cursor. Using FrEdWriter you may load only a part of a file. This can be handy if you want to copy or merge (cut and paste) sections of files. To do this press 'L' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. Enter the filename and add delimiters (!) marking what you want loaded. For example: oad(?=Catalog) :FILENAME!The!.! will load the text from the first "The" to the first "." found in the file. If you add an "A" to the end of this: oad(?=Catalog) :FILENAME!The!.!A then ALL parts of the file that start with "The" and end with "." will be loaded. If you add an "N" to the end of the load command: oad(?=Catalog) :FILENAME!The!.!N then the text between the first "The" and the first "." will be loaded. Neither the "The" or the "." will be loaded. These two can be combined so that: oad(?=Catalog) :FILENAME!The!.!AN will load ALL the text between each occurrence of "The" and "." in the file. You can also choose to load a part of a file from the beginning of the file to a marked point, or choose to load a part of a file from a marked point to the end of the file with FrEdWriter. To do this press 'L' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key and type the filename. To load from the beginning of a file to a marker add two delimiters, your marker and another delimiter. Press 'Return' to proceed. For example: oad(?=Catalog) :FILENAME!!$$! will load from the beginning of the file to the marker '$$'. To load from a marker to the end of the file add a delimiter, your marker and another delimiter. Press 'Return' to proceed. For example: oad(?Catalog) :FILENAME!%%! will load from '%%' to the end of the file. FrEdWriter also offers another feature that can be useful when loading files. If you wish to look at the contents of a file, or part of a file, that is on a disk without loading the file into memory. You may do this by adding a backward slash '\' to the end of the filename: oad(?=Catalog) :FILENAME\ will print the file "FILENAME" to the screen without loading it into memory. Use 'Ctrl S' to stop and start the text scrolling on the screen. This can be very useful when you have one file in memory and want to merge it with another file, or part of a file. You may check that you are going to merge the correct parts before it is done. This may save loading an incorrect file or file part into memory and then having to remove it. The backward slash feature may be combined with the A and N feature mentioned above. This makes it simple to accurately merge parts of documents as they may be viewed on the screen prior to merging. When "Ctrl L" is pressed, after it has been used, the filename that was last used is displayed. If you wish to use this filename again then you should enter an equals '=' sign. oad(?=Catalog) :=ILENAME will load the file "FILENAME" again. The equals sign '=' may be combined with other load commands such as: oad(?=Catalog) :=\ or oad(?=Catalog) :=!The!.!AN\ This feature of FrEdWriter can be used to save a lot of typing. SEE: The section on COPYING and MERGING to learn how to copy text that is in the computers memory using the oad option. ProDOS FILENAMES: You must use valid ProDOS filenames when working with FrEdWriter. These can have no more than 15 characters. The first character must be a letter, the remaining characters letters, numbers or periods (Full Stops). They cannot contain spaces or non letter characters. If a filename starts with a slash (/) FrEdWriter accepts this as being a ProDOS pathname. SEE: The ProDOS Users's Manual for more details on working with ProDOS. SETTING PAGE WIDTH: You can set the width of the page that you wish to work on with FrEdWriter by pressing 'W' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. You may then enter the desired page width. The range of acceptable widths is '1' to '240' letters per line. Horizontal scrolling allows for page widths that are wider than the screen. This feature of FrEdWriter allows you adjust the text display to suit your monitor, and is also handy to format your work so that it appears on the screen as it will be printed. When FrEdWriter is first used the screen width is set to 65 letters in the 80 column mode and 38 in the 40 column mode. Setting the width on the screen also sets the page width in the printer options. This is so your work will be printed as it appears on the screen. MOVING THE CURSOR: To move the cursor through your work use the four arrow keys. When using an Apple ][ use 'Ctrl A' for the up arrow and 'Ctrl Z' for the down arrow. To move the cursor to the beginning of your work press 'B' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. To move the cursor to the end of your work press 'E' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. By holding down the Open-Apple key while pressing the Up or Down arrows, the cursor is moved to the next paragraph. TABBING YOUR WORK: You may tab your typing using the TAB key with FrEdWriter (Ctrl-I when using an Apple ][ or ][+). Each time the TAB key is pressed five spaces are placed in the text at the position of the cursor. These may be placed at the left margin or in the middle of your text. DELETING TEXT: To delete text use the 'Del' key. Use 'Ctrl D' to delete text on an Apple ][. Move the Cursor one character to the right of the last character that you want to delete and press the 'Del' key. By holding the key down repeated deleting occurs. To delete lines and paragraphs of text hold down the 'Open Apple' key while pressing the 'Del' key. This will delete from the left of cursor to the end of line. This is a good way to remove larger amounts of text from your work. NOTE: Be CAREFUL when using 'Open Apple Delete' as text is removed very quickly when you hold the key down and it cannot be retrieved. CHANGING THE CASE OF TEXT: FrEdWriter allows you to change the case of the text that appears on the screen. Lower case letters can be changed to upper case and upper case to lower case. To change case press 'C' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. Use the left and right arrow keys to move the cursor over the text that you want changed. Case change mode may be turned off by pressing any key except the left and right arrow keys. SHOWING RETURN CHARACTERS: FrEdWriter allows you to see the Return characters that are in your text by showing them as an inverse P, for new Paragraph. The Return key should only be pressed when you want to start a new paragraph (new line). Apart from this the word processor will organise your text so that it fits neatly on lines without cutting off words. If you don't want to see the Return characters this option may be turned on and off by pressing 'R' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. MOVING PIECES OF TEXT: Small pieces of text (up to 250 charaters) may be moved from one part of your work to another. To do this move the cursor so that it is one character to the right of the last character to be moved. Press the 'Left Arrow' key while holding down the 'Open Apple' key. The text will be "eaten up" by the cursor. When all text to be moved has been "eaten up" move the cursor to where you want to insert the text. Press the 'Right Arrow' key while holding down the 'Open Apple' key and the text will be "pushed" into that spot. When you have eaten up 250 characters you will not be able eat up any more until you have put the already eaten characters where you want them to go. FINDING AND REPLACING TEXT: FrEdWriter can search through your work and find any group of letters or words. To do this press 'F' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. You must use delimiters (!) to mark what you want FrEdWriter to search for. NOTE: You may use any character as a delimiter as long as that character is not found in what you want to find. The search will be done from the current position of the cursor to the right and down. If you want to search all of your work move the cursor to the beginning using 'Ctrl B'. For example: ind :!Word! will search for the word "Word". If it is found you will see the prompt and be given the options to: ind :RETURN=Proceed - proceed searching for another occurence by pressing the 'Return' key. - cancel the search by pressing any other key. If not found, you will be left with the cursor at the bottom of your work. When you search for a word FrEdWriter looks for the occurence of the letters in the word. This means that if the letters appear in another word it will also find that word. For Example: ind :!the! will find 'there' and 'other' as well as 'the'. To eliminate finding words inside words you can add a space before and after your search. This will only find the word you are looking for, when there is a space before and after that word, and not when it is found in other words. For Example: ind :! the ! will only find the word 'the'. To search and then replace letters and words in your text press 'F' while pressing the 'Ctrl' key. Enter what you want FrEdWriter to search for, and then put what you want it to be replaced with. Again, you must use delimiters '!'. For example: ind :!front!back! will search for the word "front". If it is found you will see the prompt and be given the the options: ind :RETURN=Proceed / Y=Replace - to replace it with "back" by pressing 'Y'. Press 'Return' to then proceed. - to proceed searching for another occurence by pressing the 'Return' key. - to cancel the search by pressing any other key. If not found, you will be left with the cursor at the bottom of your work. By adding an 'A' at the end of a SEARCH AND REPLACE the replacing will be done automatically. For example: ind :!freind!friend!A will replace all occurences of "freind" with "friend". You are now at the bottom of the Aussie FrEd Documentation. To go to the Beginning of the file press the B key while holding down the Ctrl key. This is the second part of the FrEd's Australian Documentation. If you want to look at the first part of the documentation it is in a file on the Aussie FrEd disk called DOC.1 To print this second part of the documentation see the print box below. Remember again, have fun with FrEd. Press the down arrow key now. The Print Box ------------- If you want to continue printing the Australian documentation for FrEd where you left off part 1, follow these instructions: Press the down arrow key now. If you have a 40 column screen then you will have to change the Page Width before printing. To do this press W while holding down the Ctrl key, type 65 and press the Return key. Press the down arrow key now. 1. Press Ctrl P to see the Print Menu. 2. Change the Top Line to: Aussie FrEd Documentation - # - 3. Change First Page Number to 13. 4. Select to Print This Document. Press the down arrow key now. SPECIAL DELIMITERS: FrEdWriter allows you to use special delimiters and symbols to search your text. These characters make the search command a lot more powerful. They allow you to use Wild Cards, Any Length Symbols, and to search for the 'Return' character. A Wild Card symbol can be used to stand for any character in a search. It allows you to make searches where you are not sure of spelling or the order of the characters. An Any Length symbol allows you to search for strings of characters up to 255 characters in length by only typing one character. A 'Return' symbol will allow you to search for strings of characters that contain 'Return' characters. The normal 'Return' character cannot be used in a search command as it terminates the command entry and commences the search. The chart below displays the possible combinations of delimiters and special characters that may be used in searches. This allows you to pick a set of symbols that will not be found in your search. It is important that the special delimiters you use are not found in your text. Delimiter Any Length 'Return' Wild Card Symbol Symbol Symbol =================================================== ! None None None < = > ? # $ % & & ' ( ) * + , - =================================================== Some examples might help to illustrate how this feature may be used: ind :ind :< will find any string of letters that start with 'Th' and end with a '.' followed by a 'Return' character. ind :*Th--r+end.,*There is an end.,* will find a string of letters any length that starts with 'Th', then any two letters, followed by 'r' and replace this with 'There is an end.' followed by a 'Return' character. It is best to experiment with this option for a short time. You will soon get the idea of what characters to use for the search that you want to make. NOTE: When searching using FrEdWriter always put what is to be found exactly as it appears. The computer does not see "WORD" as being the same as "word". SAVING FILES: To save the text that is in the computers memory onto a ProDOS disk press 'S' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. You can now enter a Filename. By pressing the 'Return' key with no Filename you will be returned to your work. By entering a '?' as the Filename you may see a catalog of the TEXT type files on any ProDOS disk. You may select which disk drive to look at by adding a comma and the drive number. For example: ave(?=Catalog) :?,d2 will catalog the files on the disk in drive 2. All further saving will be to the disk drive last selected until you catalog another disk or use a ProDOS pathname. You should type the name that you want to use to save the file. By entering a correct filename the text in the computer's memory will be saved in a file on the disk. SEE: The section on ProDOS filenames if you're not sure what to type. If the Filename has already been used you will be asked if you want to delete, or write over, the old file. Type 'Yes' (or Y) and press 'Return' if you want to save using that Filename or 'No' (or N) and press 'Return' if you want to keep the old file that is on the disk. If you understand ProDOS pathnames then you may also use these with FrEdWriter. By typing a filename that starts with a slash (/) FrEdWriter accepts the filename as being a pathname and saves the file. Using FrEdWriter you can save a portion of your work to disk. This is handy if you want to copy and merge (cut and paste) sections of files. To do this mark the end of what you want to copy with an endmark, which can be any unique character or characters not found in your text. %%, @@ and $$ are good endmarks to use. Move the cursor to start of what you want to save and press 'S' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. Enter a Filename and add your endmark with delimiters (!). For example: ave(?=Catalog) :COPYSECTION!@@! will save from the cursor to the characters "@@". If you add an addition '+' sign to the end of a filename then the text in memory will be added to end of that file. For example: ave(?=Catalog) :FILENAME+ will add the text in memory to the end of the file "FILENAME". You will be asked if you want to delete the old file "FILENAME". You should type Yes and press the 'Return' key. The text in memory will then be added to the file "FILENAME". When "Ctrl S" is press after it has been used once the filename that was last used is displayed. If you wish to use this filename again then you should enter an equals '=' sign. ave(?=Catalog) :=ILENAME will save the file "FILENAME" again. The equals sign '=' may be combined with other save commands such as: ave(?=Catalog) :=!$$! or ave(?=Catalog) :=!%%!+ This feature of FrEdWriter can be used to save a lot of typing, however, PLEASE BE CAREFUL using the equals sign '=' to save files as you are not asked if you want to delete an old file on the disk that has the same name. Any file on the disk with the filename being used WILL BE DELETED. When swapping disks it is a lot safer to run the cursor over the old filename using the 'right arrow' key. COPYING AND MERGING (Cutting and Pasting): Sections of files may be copied and merged using FrEdWriter. To merge files, or sections of files, have one file in memory. Move the cursor to where you want the merging to occur. Press 'L' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. Enter the Filename of the file to be merged and any Delimiters that you want to include. Press 'Return' and the two files will be merged. For example: To merge Part 1 of "MYSTORY", which is in the computers memory, with "YOURSTORY", which is on a disk, move the cursor to the position where you want to insert the text into "MYSTORY". Press 'L' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key and type: oad(?=Catalog) :YOURSTORY and press the 'Return' key. The two files will be merged. If Delimiters are added then only a part of "YOURSTORY" may be merged. oad(?=Catalog) :YOURSTORY!Part 2!Part 3! would only merge from the beginning of Part 2 to the beginning of Part 3 of "YOURSTORY" provided that those markers were in the file. To make a copy of the text that is in the computers memory, or a section of the text in memory, and place it at the position of the cursor you can use the oad command. This is the quickest way to move large pieces of text in a document. Just copy them to where you want them moved and then delete the original text. To copy text this way you will need to mark the section of text to be copied by putting a unique character, or characters, not found elsewhere in the file. These need to be placed at the beginning and at the end of the section. @@, %% and $$ are good characters to use. You should then move the cursor to where you want to place the text and press the 'L' key while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. Enter the command: oad(?=Catalog) :#!@@!@@!N This means copy the section of text that starts with @@ and ends with @@, not including the @@ characters, to the current position of the cursor. Whenever the hash character (#) is used as a filename in a load command the text is copied to the position of the cursor from the text in memory, not from a file on a disk. All the extra commands that can be used with a normal load command can be used in this manner. SEE: The section on LOADING FILES for details of how to load parts of files and how to check the files that you want to load. SEE: The section on SAVING FILES for details on how to merge the file in memory with a file on a disk using the '+' command. To copy a piece of text so that it can be stored on a disk and later merged with another file you need to mark the end of the section to be copied with an end marker, which can be any unique character or characters. @@, $$ and %% are good charaters to use. You then move the cursor to the start of what you want to copy and save it to disk using a different Filename. For example: To copy the paragraph above place a ** for an endmark at the end of "example:". Move the cursor so that it is over the "T" in To, and press 'S' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. Now type: ave(?=Catalog) :COPYSECTION!**! and press the 'Return' key. The paragraph will be saved to disk for later merging with other files or file parts. All you have to do then is remove the "**". When you want to merge the section that has been saved on disk move the cursor to the postion where you want the text located and press 'L' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. Now type: oad(?=Catalog) :COPYSECTION or use the equals sign oad(?=Catalog) :=OPYSECTION and press the 'Return' key. The section on disk will be inserted into the text in memory. SEE: The sections on LOADING FILES and SAVING FILES to find out how to merge disk files and how to load parts of files. ERASING THE FILE IN MEMORY: If you are finished working with the text in the computer's memory and want to remove it so that you may load a new file, press 'N' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. You will be asked if you really do want to erase the memory. You must enter 'Y' or 'YES' and press the 'Return' key for the memory to be erased. By pressing only the 'Return' key you will be returned to your work. REMEMBER: Always save work that you want to keep onto a disk before erasing the memory. QUITTING FREDWRITER: When you are finished using FrEdWriter press 'Q' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. You will be asked if you really do want to quit. You must enter 'Y' or 'Yes' and press the 'Return' key to end the program. By pressing only the 'Return' key you will be returned to your work. If the FrEdWriter disk is in disk drive one then the Main Menu will reload, allowing you to use the utilities. If you wish to use another disk you should reboot the computer by pressing 'Reset' while holding down the 'Ctrl' and 'Open Apple' keys. REMEMBER: Always save work that you want to keep onto a disk before quitting FrEdWriter. PRINTING YOUR WORK ------------------ NOTE: When printing with FrEdWriter your printer interface should be connected to Slot/Port 1. To print the text that is in the computer you should press 'P' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. The print options menu will then be displayed. The print options menu looks like this: .PAGE ---------------------------------------------- FrEdWriter Printer -- Use ARROWS to choose; -- Press "RETURN" to go -- Press "ESC" to quit PRINT THIS DOCUMENT Line Length.................65 Letters Line Spacing.................Single Left Margin....................5 Letters Page Length ..................66 Lines Top & Bottom Margins...........5 Lines Form Feed....................Yes Line Feed.....................No Print Pages..................All First Page Number..............1 Print Prompts.................No Print Destination............Printer Top Line: -- PAGE # -- ----------------------------------------------- PRINT OPTIONS: By adjusting the print options you may print your work to suit your personal presentation. You should type a number between 1 and 255. By pressing the 'Return' key with no new value the old value is kept. TOP & BOTTOM MARGINS This option sets the number of lines that are left at the top and bottom of each page with no printing. It is measured in lines. To change the top and bottom margins highlight 'Top & Bottom Margins' and press the 'Return' key. You will be asked to enter your new value at the bottom of the screen. You should type a number between 0 and 30. By pressing the 'Return' key with no new value the old value is kept. FORM FEED This option is set according to the type of paper you are using. Form feed should be set to 'Yes' if you are using fan feed paper or 'No' if you are using single sheet paper. To change the form feed highlight 'Form Feed' and press the 'Return' key. This will toggle the option between 'Yes' and 'No'. LINE FEED This option is used to add a line feed character after each line is printed. This is needed by some printers. This option should be set to 'Yes' if your printer prints all the text on one line, otherwise it should be set to 'No'. To change the form feed highlight 'Line Feed' and press the 'Return' key. This will toggle the option between 'Yes' and 'No'. PRINT PAGES This option sets which pages of your document will be printed. Print pages should be set to 'All' if you want to print the entire document in memory. To print selected pages of your document highlight 'Print Pages' and press the 'Return' key. At the bottom of the screen you will be asked to enter the number of the first page to be printed. You will then be asked to enter the number of the last page to be printed. Pressing the 'Return' key with no page number or entering a higher first page number sets print pages to 'All'. NOTE: Print pages only works when 'Print Destination' is set to 'Printer'. FIRST PAGE NUMBER This option sets the number that will appear on the first page if you use a top line that includes a #. Following pages will be numbered consecutively from this setting. This option is handy if you are printing one document that has been saved in several files. Numbering may continue from where the preceding file ended. To change the first page number highlight 'First Page Number' and press the 'Return' key. You will be asked to enter your new value at the bottom of the screen. You should type a number between 1 and 255. By pressing the 'Return' key with no new value the old value is kept. PRINT PROMPTS This option sets whether prompt boxes will be printed or not. Print prompts should be set to 'Yes' if you want the prompt boxes in your document to be printed or 'No' if you don't want the prompt boxes printed. To change the print prompts highlight 'Print Prompts' and press the 'Return' key. This will toggle the option between 'Yes' and 'No'. PRINT DESTINATION This option sets where the print of your work will be sent. Print destination should be set to 'Printer' if you want to print your document using a printer or 'Screen' if you want to print your document on the computer screen. By printing your work to the screen you can see how it looks and where the page breaks will appear without wasting paper. When printing to the screen the print will stop every 22 lines so that you may view it. To continue the printing press a key. To change the print destination highlight 'Print Destination' and press the 'Return' key. This will toggle the option between 'Printer' and 'Screen'. NOTE: Your printer interface must be connected to Slot/Port 1 for FrEdWriter. .PAGE TOP LINE This option adds a page header at the top of each printed page. If you include a '#' in your top line then page numbering will be also be included. For example: Page #. will print the page header as Page 1., Page 2., etc. To add a top line highlight 'Top Line' and press the 'Return' key. At the bottom of the screen you will be asked to enter your top line. You should type the page header you want included. Pressing the 'Return' key with no top line will cause no page header to be included when your document is printed. SEE: The section on TROUBLE SHOOTING if you have problems printing your work. PUTTING PRINT COMMANDS IN YOUR TEXT: FrEdWriter allows you to put hard page breaks in your text. These should be added if you want the following print to start on a new page, even though a full page has not been printed. To add a hard page break to your text add ".PAGE" or ".page" as the first thing on a new line and press 'Return' after it. If you're not sure how to use this option have a look how it has been used in this file. Special printer commands may be embedded into your work by pressing 'V' while holding down the 'Ctrl' key. Escape and control characters may then be included in the text. Pressing 'Ctrl V' again returns you to the normal typing mode. Some examples would be: On an Epson RX Printer: Press 'Ctrl V' followed by the 'Esc' key and then 'Ctrl N' to print one line of double wide letters. Press 'Ctrl V' followed by 'Esc 4' to turn ON the Italics print. Press 'Ctrl V' followed by 'Esc 5' to turn OFF the Italics print. On an Epson JX80 Colour Printer: Press 'Ctrl V' followed by 'Esc r2' to change the print colour to red. Press 'Ctrl V' followed by 'Esc r0' to change the print colour to black. When entering Printer Codes you should not use spaces between the characters. CONSULT: your printer manual to find what codes to enter if you wish to use this option. PROMPTED WRITING ---------------- FrEdWriter allows users to create prompted writing files. Prompt boxes can be added to the text to instruct or guide other writers. The cursor cannot write in a prompt box (except in prompt box mode) and prompt boxes do not appear when a document is printed (unless you want them to). There are many situations where you might like to use prompted writing. It can be used to guide a writer to use a particular style, or to gain answers to specific questions. Notes may be added to your files that won't appear when the file is printed. To stop the cursor from moving while it is in a prompt box hold down the Open Apple key (SHIFT key Apple ][ and ][+s). For an example of a prompt box, there is one below and one at the beginning of this file to instruct you how to print this documentation. CREATING PROMPT BOXES: To create a prompt box you need to enter the prompt box mode. To do this you should press 'P' while holding down the 'Open Apple' key (When using an Apple ][ or ][+ press 'P' while holding down the 'Ctrl' and SHIFT keys). To create the top line of a prompt box press 'A' while holding down the 'Open Apple' key (Ctrl-SHIFT-S when using an Apple ][ or ][+) . An inverse line will appear. To create the left side of the prompt box you should press the 'Return' key. An inverse block will appear on the left margin. You may enter your text into the prompt box by typing normally. To create the bottom of the prompt box press 'Z' while holding down the 'Open Apple' key (Ctrl-SHIFT-X when using an Apple ][ or ][+). Another inverse line will be appear and you will be in normal typing mode again. (top line)(side line) A PROMPT BOX You can put any message to a writer in here. (bottom line) Prompted writing mode may also be turned off by pressing 'Open Apple P' (Ctrl-SHIFT-P when using an Apple ][ or ][+) while in prompted writing mode. EDITING A PROMPT BOX: To edit a prompt box that has already been created to should enter the prompted writing mode by pressing 'P' while holding down the 'Open Apple' key (Ctrl-SHIFT-P when using an Apple ][ or][+). You will then be able move the cursor into a prompt box to change its contents. The text in the box may be adjusted using the normal word processor keys. When you have finished editing the box move the cursor outside of the box and press 'Open Apple P' again (Ctrl-SHIFT-P for Apple ][ and ][+s). This will return you to normal typing mode. REMOVING PROMPT BOXES: You may remove all of the prompt boxes in a file with one command. This is useful if you have used prompt boxes in your work. They may need to be removed because they have been used to guide an author who is now finished and doesn't want the boxes, or the boxes were used to store notes no longer needed. To remove all the prompt boxes from a file press 'P' while holding down the 'Open Apple' key to enter prompt box mode (Ctrl-SHIFT-P on Apple ][ and ][+s). Press 'R' while holding down the 'Open Apple' key to Remove the boxes (Ctrl-SHIFT-R on Apple ][ and ][+s). You will be asked REMOVE PROMPTS? (Y/N):. Type 'Y' and press 'Return' to remove the prompts or 'N' and press 'Return' to leave the prompts in your text. TROUBLE SHOOTING ---------------- PROGRAM PROBLEMS: If the program will not load, or you get the message 'UNABLE TO LOAD PRODOS': Check the HARDWARE / SOFTWARE requirements for the program in this manual. Check that the computer is functioning properly by trying to load another ProDOS disk. If you can't load another disk refer to your APPLE USER'S MANUALS about possible hardware problems. If you can, check to see if the program will load on a different APPLE computer. If it won't load then it is likely that there is a problem with your FrEdWriter disk. If you are using an Apple ][ or ][+ and text on the screen appears as strange unreadable characters then it is likely that your computer does not have a lower case chip installed. If you cannot use upper and lower case and the Open Apple commamds seem not work then it is likely that you do not a SHIFT key modification installed. .PAGE PRINTER PROBLEMS: Your printer interface must be connected to Slot/Port 1 for FrEdWriter. Check to see that it is. Always have the printer ready to print, with paper aligned, before you select to print. If you select to print a document when the printer is not turned on or it is not 'on line', the program will wait for the printer to become ready. Bringing the printer 'on line' will commence the printing. Pressing 'Ctrl Reset' will take you back to your document. Be careful not to press 'Open Apple Ctrl Reset' as this will reboot the computer. If you select to print to a printer that is not connected to Slot/Port 1 or no printer is connected you will be returned to your work. You are now at the bottom of the Aussie FrEd Documentation.
