The example of Andy N.'s ShrinkIt! comes to mind. One option is to license the disk formatting package from Apple Software Licensing, at +1 408 974 9159. Last I saw, it was $50 per product-year. (Provided as EDASM assembly source code which you can adapt to your needs and your assembler.) If you *don't* need to support 5.25" disks, formatting any other sort of device and laying down an empty directory is not too tough--you can do it yourself based on information in the ProDOS 8 Technical Reference Manual. If you *do* need to support 5.25" disks and don't want to license code from Apple, maybe somebody will explain HyperFormat...it's been a while, but I think it's PD source code for formatting 5.25 disks. -- David A.
