I finally went out and did it: I bought meself a 28.8 modem, for only $40. The downside is, it's a generic (no brand on case, box, manual...) made in Taiwan, and upon looking in the manual and ProTerm 3.1's init string to compare to what I'd been telling my USR Sportster 14.4, I realize this modem doesn't have most of the commands I'd been issuing it! (no &Ax, &Bx, &Hx, &Ix, &Nx, and specifically no &R2 -- what kinda railroad are they runnin' here??) The "straight out" default settings (&F) half the time would not drop to terminal after connecting (the timer goes on and on...) and half the time would let me at the BBS but after a few seconds it would hang up. ("Welcome to ProStar! You are caller 16234 on line ") Seemed I couldn't connect with anything faster than 19200 reliably -- this board included. After much fiddling I finally came up with some- thing that lets me connect at high speed adequately: Protocol: Generic Fixed Speed (CTS/RTS) Init: ATX4Y0\N2 For the curious: \N0 gave too much garbage, \N3 and \N4 dropped carrier after a minute or two ... which is also why I added the Y0. After seeing how clunky the data traveled at 28.8 I decided to add %B26400 to the middle of the init and things flow more smoothly. Now, why I'm writing... After much duress I have good comm at high speed (which is a different tome than I had originally written here but a BBS crash kept me from sending immediately), but now I can't connect to my Apple usergroup's BBS (which is permanently at 2400) without issuing an ATZ first... can anyone suggest a solution? << mushroom >> |"Life is funny.
