Hi All, Thanks for agreeing to BETA test gmail/OL (gmail OffLine) for the Apple //gs computer. This is BETA version 1.0. I would appreciate your suggestions for optimization, look-and-feel, and for fixing any bugs you may find. The only GORP (gregg's offline reader protocol) server is on acme.fred.org in San Diego. Morgan Davis is supposed to be working on a gorp server program for ProLine so as soon as that is finished, you may find more access. Contact me if you would like a mail account on acme.fred.org for the duration of gmail's testing. I have included the UNIX tar.Z file with a version of GORP that should be compatible with all SysV R3 UNIX systems as well as most BSD systems. The only really system dependent stuff is in reading and verifying password entries. These should be OK though from system to system. The GORP server program for UNIX is a modification to The Morgan Davis Group's UPCP package. Morgan gets all the credit for the hard core programming, but I have to take responsibility for the modifications. Disclaimer: Omega Software Solutions claims no responsibilities for the function, use, or safety of the GORP server program. As different UNIX systems respond to system calls in a variety of ways, results on your UNIX may vary. Changes, modifications, and suggestions are welcome as always. There is no editor built in to gmail/OL. If you choose to use gmail/OL as an s16 program, you won't be able to edit anything. As an exe program, launched from the Orca or GNO shell, you must specify an editor that your shell can access. (see the manual for more info on this) I have gotten some strange and unpredictable crashes while using the ORCA shell's 'edit' program. The same problems haven't happened from emacs, ROSE, or vi (from GNO). Let me know how edit works on your system. I have also included the GORP specifications. Although the C code is not all that hard to follow, a concise definition of how a GORP transaction should take place is helpful. Feel free to use the pseudo-code and actual C code to implemement GORP on other BBS platforms. See the manual file for a text version of the manual I have completed so far. The only major function mentioned in the manual that is not included in the beta version of gmail/OL is the configuration file editor. A complete description of the required and optional gmail.cf entries is included. Use any standard text editor to make modifications to this file until the second beta version ships with the configuration editor built in. I think that is all I can tell you for now. Your time and suggestions are very much appreciated. Gregg D. Brekke Omega Software Solutions
