It depends on the particular application you are running. Apple published a technical note (sorry I don't have the number handy at the moment) that gave guidelines for using the digits 00 through 99. I believe that the range 40 through 99 covers 1940 to 1999 and 00 through 39 covers 2000 to 2039. Your system shouldn't crash but various utilities might show interesting date values. For ProDOS 8 users, a more annoying problem than Y2K (Year 2000) is the need to update the date table built-in ProDOS every 5-7 years.
