I can confirm that my ROM 3 is not unique to this problem, I have seen other machines which exhibit the problem (when I originally went to complain about my ROM 3 glitches, I was invited to visit Apple HQ in my area, where I was shown a machine _identical_ to mine). As well, when Jim Ferr lived in my area, he confirmed there were indeed other ROM 3's floating around with this bug. Apparently a few hundred or thousand went into production before the situtation was corrected, but Apple made no recall since the problem was so minor. If memory serves right, I bumped into someone on comp.sys.apple2 many years ago who had a ROM 3 like mine. The glitch, as far as I can tell, is that the two programmer CDA's are always flagged to 'on' and will always be present in the Classic Desk Accessories menu. System 6.0.1's SetStart Control Panel has no affect, but I did get Jay Krell to write a small INIT which is called "BadRom3Bit". It changes the value at location E1/017D from 'FF' to '00' (this will clear the CDA's next time you warm-boot). Also, when it first starts, it forces the GS to remove Visit Monitor and Memory Peeker (as well as Alternate Display Mode) from the menu so you don't have to reboot to get rid of them initially. Getting rid of A.D.M too was Jay's idea, since I never used it. The issue with Alternative Display Mode always being active is a completely new issue to me, I always thought it was active by default on the ROM 3, until a couple of days ago. It sounds like this may be yet another bug with this particular ROM 3. Mitchell Spector spec@vax2.concordia.ca
