Subject: Think different, think of an Apple 22 with linux From: Damien Mattei Newsgroups: comp.sys.mac.advocacy,comp.sys.apple2 Date: Sat, 02 Oct 1999 13:37:34 +0200 Lines: 78 Message-ID: <37F5EE7E.361D0A8C@altavista.net> NNTP-Posting-Host: 194.149.168.178 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Trace: news4.isdnet.net 938863900 15738 194.149.168.178 (2 Oct 1999 11:31:40 GMT) X-Complaints-To: abuse@isdnet.net NNTP-Posting-Date: 2 Oct 1999 11:31:40 GMT X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.05 [en] (X11; I; Linux 2.0.34 i586) Xref: lobby comp.sys.mac.advocacy:585724 comp.sys.apple2:89261 I think i have a much better commercial idea than Mac OS X: 1/Get the shell of the iMac just for the pretty look 2/put inside a low cost compatible PC with a big hard disk the processor,an intel compatible, could be manufactured by Motorola or AMD or Cyrix,or be an Intel, all the Hardware should be standart compatible device, apple will produce Monitors,Printers,Scanner Modems and others but you could use standart PC-compatible device too,of course. 3/on the first partition of the hard disk put linux: the quality and security level of this linux will be the same as linux RedHat,all should be under GNU license except as with the RedHat,the installation program and some other stuff, apple's programmers will make easy configuration tools, programs that autodetect and configure device as in the Mac,Apple device will be particularly easy to configure as the hardware is known by the kernel.Linux will be preinstalled and configured.StarOffice or somethink like that will be shipped with linux. This Linux box should as easy to use as a Mac due to the talent of Apple Programmers! 4/on the second partition Win2000 in the present it is commercially indispensable hence buyers could have the possibility to buy it separately or not to buy it.In the future there will be no more necessary as everybody will use Linux ;-) no other comment except that ou can erase it if you want... 5/on the third partition MacOS a Mac OS compiled for intel.Should be technically possible,i think. This not necessary to the commercial success of the operation as Mac user are a minority and will be optional( as Windows2000) 6/on the fourth primaty partition ummmhhhhhhhh... the linux swap! 7/put the apple 22(=apple 4,historically there was apple 1 (1979) created by S.Wosniak and Steve Jobs, apple 2 the great, apple 3 (not a success story),and now! 20 year later the apple 4!) logo on it and sell it AT THE PRICE OF A NORMAL PC-COMPATIBLE! (after all it is a PC compatible, linux is free software, and you have the choice to do not buy Windows2000) an other idea of name for this computer: Apple Steve ! I will buy such a computer. who other people than me will buy it? 1/ people who want a PC home computer compatible with all the software and device of the windows world,of course it's a compatible! 2/ people that want to use mac software because it have Mac OS 3/ people that want to use Linux and free software,it will be compatible with all the intel386 archive or .rpm that you can find on the internet!(thousands of software) finally you have a product that will hit the whole World market! i will talk a little about Mac OS X now: Mac OS X is based on Unix BSD. who will buy it? processing by elimination: Not the people that want a PC-compatible.(95% of the users!) because Mac OS X will be shipped only for Mac hardware. Not the Linux users which are a majority of student or programmers and use both windows and linux on their machine. in fact,Mac users will buy it including some people that need Unix as a server and have trust both in Unix BSD and Apple Mac. the result is that ONLY A MINORITY WILL BUY MAC OS X that is because my Apple 22 will be a much better idea. It will be fun to put again on the back of my car an Apple sticker... -- Damien Mattei / e-mail: Damien.Mattei@altavista.net Web page: http://perso.libertysurf.fr/damien_mattei/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- "The Journey is the Reward"
