Next, I type the instructions into AppleWorks and edit them to create the final draft of the instructions. These instructions are then printed onto a disk as a standard text file. *&Then, I use Program Writer (which I highly rscreen or printed out to a user selected slot. Then the game program is run. *&Once I sit down at the computer, I change the startup program to reflect the new program's name, then I draw the title page, pack it using Dav Holle's Pack/Unpack routine aines which contain the program's name. It initializes the case converter (if resident in an Apple ][+), loads and unpacks the title picture and asks the player if she wants the sound on. If the player needs instructions, they are loaded and displayed on atement at a time) in the form of flowcharts. I always end up with many flowcharts for each program, the main flowchart and one flowchart for each subroutine I need. *&The startup program for each of my games is virtually the same, except for a few le program instructions, finalizing the rules and controls of the game. Then I write an outline of the general flow of the program, including the routines I need. *&Lastly, also on paper, I write all the code I need for the entire game (one program ste procedure I followed writing my first program (Craps), I now plan out programs completely, away from the computer, before I type in any code. Less than 25% of my time programming is spent sitting at the computer. On paper, I write the first draft of throm games in books. Other times I make a change in the rules to (I think) improve the game, or I combine features of several different games into one completely new game. In any event, the game must be fun and challenging to play. *&In contrast to ththe quality of the program. Softy was right. That constructive criticism by Softy helped me realize that if I became a lazy programmer, I would leave myself open to even more criticism later! *&Many of my solitaire card game programs come directly fibed to Softdisk (issue #12). I submitted my program, Craps, to Softdisk and they published it in issue #15, but Softy stated in that issue that he didn't like my pay-off odds. I took a shortcut to make the program easier to write and it had compromised es graphics over programs using any other Applesoft display. I wrote my first program, "Craps", with no preplanning, while sitting at the computer. From start to finish it was spaghetti code, no structure whatsoever! *&About that time, I first subscr dealt with programming on the Apple ][. Nibble magazine was especially helpful in expanding my knowledge of Applesoft. *&Right from the start, I decided to use hi-res graphics whenever possible in my programs, because I preferred programs using hi-rputer programmer if I could learn Applesoft BASIC. I learned Applesoft by reading THE APPLESOFT TUTORIAL while sitting at the computer experimenting with the examples in the text. *&I also typed in programs from any magazine or book I could find thatrs never faded. *&I bought my first Apple (an Apple ][+) back in September 1981. I got it to play the many arcade-type games that were available. But I quickly became bored just playing games. That's when I realized that I could, indeed, become a commember, computers have intrigued me. I grew up wanting to be a computer programmer. I even went to college to study computer science. But college didn't work out for me and after several months I quit school and got a job. But my fascination with computeecommend!) to enter the code for the game program, copied directly from the flowcharts. Once that file is complete, I test for syntax errors with the utility D.Bug from the D-Code disk. Next, the toolbox routines are appended to the file. *&Lastly, I play/test the entire program for bugs. Once I think all the bugs are out, I go back and fine-tune the program. This includes correcting any cosmetic details that need improving.
