He pulled open his desk drawer. He kept his great-grandfather's muzzle-loading pistol loadOQRSTUVWXYated? All you have to do is BRUN it! Are there special memory restrictions? You bet! Obviously, your program must not use the same memory that the picture is being displayed on. That's either the range from 8192 to 16383 for hi-res page 1 or from 1638een 1 or 2, and what to call the packed picture it creates. 8. You have the option of loading a packed picture. This option will only load pictures that have been packed by PACKED PICTURE RUNNER. *& How do you display the packed picture you just cree notes when you look at the catalog. 5. View the picture, to be sure you loaded the right one. *&6. Create a packed picture from the one in memory (the one you just loaded). 7. You need to tell the program whether to display the picture on hi-res scr*&1. Of course, RUN PAC.PIC.RUN 2. Select the path you want to load the normal picture from. 3. Catalog that directory, if necessary, to find the name of the picture. 4. Load the picture. You will need to enter the exact file name, so maybe you should takan the original, but BRUN-able (no CALLs required) and self-displaying (no fiddling with those pesky "soft switches"). How do you do it? Well, the procedure is mostly self-evident once you run the program, but here comes a quick synopsis, anyway. . And when you pack the picture the problem only gets worse. PACKED PICTURE RUNNER eliminates all the difficulties. *& Starting with any, normal, 17 block hi-res picture, you can produce a packed picture that's not only smaller (in most cases) th PACKED PICTURE RUNNER, and that he is about to enter... the Packed Picture Zone. *& If you use hi-res graphics, you've been in Tom's situation more than once. The trouble with hi-res has always been that it takes SO many steps to display a picture of collapse because his graphics have swallowed all his disk space. He doesn't suspect that a new factor is about to enter his life, that the postman is just steps from his door with the latest issue of Softdisk, that this issue contains a program calleden repeat the process for all 71 of the pictures I need.... The eagerness quickly faded as a black despair re-asserted itself. Tom sobbed, his forehead on the keyboard..... *& Submitted for your consideration: A struggling programmer on the verge, CALL some address PEEK out the length of the packed picture, BSAVE it, then make my program BLOAD the packed picture. *& Then I BLOAD PACK/UNPACK, use two or three more POKEs, CALL some other address, and use the soft switches to display hi-res, thck of matches." Something clicked in his head... Pack... Pitcher... He could PACK the pictures! Eagerly, he started jotting down some notes. "Let's see. All I have to do is BLOAD each picture, BLOAD PACK/UNPACK, remember the two POKEs required for itnd bumped the pitcher of pure spring water he always kept handy during long programming jobs. It wobbled for a second and then upended itself neatly into the open drawer. *& "Blast!" Tom thought, "Knocked over my pitcher for an paed and primed there. "For protection," he told his friends. *& "A flash of light, a moment of pain, and it'll all be over," he thought. As he reached for the gun, his sleeve swept a pack of matches onto the floor. He leaned over to pick them up a4 to 24575 for hi-res page 2. Also, the packed pictures load at address 24576, so you need to leave some memory above there alone, as well. You'll be safe if you don't use memory from 24576 to 32767. *& The simplest way to protect all that memory is with the HIMEM command. If you plan to display on hi-res page 1, use HIMEM:7168. If you use page 2, use HIMEM:15360. If you get an OUT OF MEMORY or NO BUFFERS error when you RUN your program, you may be able to correct it by not using HIMEM and makiacked picture using the picture":"in memory."::"In addition to the selected hi-res":"page, the resulting program occupies":"$6000-.":"Create BRUNable picture?
