First, the quality of craftsmanship. The Apple II series of computers was designed to work. You could find them in businesses doing real jobs, in schools training students, and in homes entertaining us. That was not true of its compitition. I know many will take exception to those words, but like it or not the Apple II was a work horse. Just about every computer, that followed the Apple II line of computesr, was faster; every OS that followed ProDOS was better. Scommunity may embrace the Apple ][+ and ProDOS, and develop more ProDOS based software for these earlier computers. Since it is 38 years later that may be just a pipe dream. It was our goal to provide a stable version of ProDOS that provided addition navg the 6502 as the processor of choice, choosing to not utilize the 65C02 opcodes, and we did not remove support for the Apple ][+. Perhaps with a few stable releases of ProDOS such as 2.4.1 by John Brookes, and version 3.0.1 our predecessor, the developer he same. Version 3.0.1 will work with the Apple ][, ][+ and many clones. However, the amount of software developed for ProDOS and the Apple ][+ is not substantial, so with version 3.1.2 we focused more on the Apple IIe / IIc and GS. We continued supportin the source code for 2.03. There was very little notable change to the main code body between these two versions of ProDOS. Once the disassembly was completed, and our source code was commented, changes started taking place. The code base in many ways is tersion 3.0.1, our code base mostly came from ProDOS version 2.03. This version was selected, reviewed, and disassembled for our design decisions, as it was a stable release. The source code to ProDOS 1.7 was readily available to help in reverse engineeringny other version or ProDOS, but simply is a version that acts and behaves as we desire. We hope that you will enjoy using this version of ProDOS too. Familiarity with ProDOS version 2.03 will be useful in understanding some of our design decisions. With v ProDOS on most clones. To be honest though, this was not our goal, it just saved code space. As we developed our version, other new versions of ProDOS were released that addressed some but not all of our goals. This version is not intended to overshadow ato provide functionality similar to the later releases of ProDOS, for the earlier Apple II computers. So we started out to make a newer version of ProDOS that would support most of the Apple II family of computers. In the process we also enabled the use ofput, existing versions of Apple's ProDOS were outdated. Also most versions were lacking support for older Apple II models. The versions that did support the older Apple II models did not provide an easy means to navigate storage devices. It was our desire * This is fresh release of ProDOS. It maintains version compatibility with previous versions of ProDOS, yet provides a 40 column user interface and a fresh approach to the ProDOS Utilities. To start: a little bit about why we undertook this task. Simply ed ProDOS and studied its makeup. I reworked some of the code, very little of the core OS, but a lot of the launcher and created a version that fit my personal needs. If you like it, then please feel free to use it and pass it on. ** About ProDOS 3.1.2 *of ProDOS! I know each computer has its fans. Well, I am a fan of the Apple IIe. So I am not quite ready to retire a computer that can in so many ways still meet the needs of so many aspects of computing; just a little slower. For that reason I disassembldy to be retired. We do not mean, that it could keep up with the changes of the future, we mean the hardware was not ready to quit. For those who own one of the many Apple II computers that remain, we aren't done using them either. So yes, another version ome may argue that SOS, ProDOS predecessor, was better too. However, whenever you sit down and actually use the Apple II, you feel quality. That quality often does not exist any longer. As far as we are concerned, Apple retired a computer, that was not reaigational options. ProDOS 3.1.2 provides addition support for hardware that was not available with the Apple //e computer's last official release. The new FORMAT.SYS will work with SD cards and drive images up to 32 MB. It also still supports the formatting of a floppy disks. Also specific support was added for the CFFA series of hardware, allowing menu access of the CFFA through several utilities. We have also tested several clock cards, even the much older ones such as the cards by Mountain Computer. Wheen back to drive 1. Launcher initially displays only executable files. You will see only the supported system files as ProDOS 2.03 displayed. To see a complete catalog of file, type an Asterisk "*". All files will be listed, and the Asterisk in the Launchresides in that slot, or not, ProDOS will attempt to find a ProDOS volume in that slot. As an example, to gain access to Slot 6, drive two, double tap the number 6 key on the keyboard - once for slot 6, and one for Drive 2. Tap it again and you will be tak-- ** ProDOS Launcher ** ProDOS 3.1.2 comes with a Launcher interface. When ProDOS boots it will put you directly into the Launcher at startup. The Launcher navigates quickly from slot to slot and drive to drive. Enter any number from 1 to 7. If a drive nd able to install more software. Please note, the constraint of 80 files or directories in the catalog display does not exist in the OS itself or in Launcher, but only in the utilities. --------------------------------------------------------------------the software is used on some models of an Apple ][+. As with the original utilities included with ProDOS, many other specialized programs exist that go far beyond the scope of our utilities. MANAGER.SYS provides enough usability to get you up and running aFor most all ProDOS storage media this is more than enough. It is however, less than ProDOS itself will support. The utility was intentionally limited, since the object code of Catalog is used with several of our other utilities leaving RAM constraints if quickly, there are a plethora of tools to do that, and the original filer utilities will also work correctly on ProDOS 3.1.2. Software Limitations: CATALOG: The maximum supported files or directories that the catalog of MANAGER.SYS will display is 80. ur liking. For instance, the copy utilities have been rewritten to copy one file at a time, but from any source. We must confess, this is something we wanted and we understand may not be what most people want. But then again, if you want to copy many filesely based on the original ProDOS Filer tools. There is a similar feel and functionality to many aspects of Filer. There are, and have always been many superior tools to the ProDOS Filer. In this particular instance we changed some of the functionality to o sure you get the version with the 80 Column support. Thanks for trying ProDOS 3.1.2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ** MANAGER.SYS ** The MANAGER.SYS was crudives large than 32 megabytes, or updating Mouse Desk. We like the Apple //e as it is. As it was used before the cloud invaded our privacy and before software enforced change. One last point, ProDOS 3.1.2 will will support Apple's 80 column card - just makey have chosen to stick to a more traditional approach to the OS and we wish to continue in that vein. We wanted our user experience to be more like it was when the computer was released. We have no plans of expanding the operating system. Nor supporting drour desire to play with and program these old computers. It is mostly the ability to control the machine at the very core level. We enjoy the value they still present in the computer world, and that keep us coding. In designing version 3.1.2, We personallre updated drivers were needed, we did our best and included them on the release disks and images. We realize that other versions of ProDOS have been released to the community, and they are excellent versions. Let's face it though, that isn't what drives er will be highlighted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ** ProDATE ** The ProDATE utility is designed to help overcome the ProDOS date limitation of 6 years. Apple designed ProDOS to look at a table and based on a match of a weekday in the table, select a year. So ProDOS knows what year it is within a 6 year pocket only. Unless the table is updated from time to time, ProDOS will start date stamping files incorrectly. This utility allows you to modify the look up taehijklmn$a$v*5 PRODOS.3.1.2BPRODOS QUIT.SYSTEM MANAGER.SYSo5B FORMAT.SYS5PRO.DATE кȠ ԺźέԠԠĠú ԠӠ Ժ ź ӺԠ ĺԠ ΠϠ / XL#͠κӠŠúΠĠ٠Ơ˿ԠſκԠ׺ԠˠӺ غԠ РҺ úŠ our version of ProDOS. r ProDATE and where ProDATE will look for the ProDOS system file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a rough draft of the many feature available in ProDATE, Manager.SYS and ProDOS. We hope you will enjoy using is the correct day of the week for the date if ProDATE is used to create a date table. X: SLOT & DRIVE - You can select any slot and drive supported by ProDOS using this command. Once a slot and drive has been entered, it will become the default drive fo been created. The PRODOS system file in the root of the currently selected drive or last drive used will be patched. W: SET WEEK DAY - This allows you to set the week day separate from the date specified. Please note that it is important that the weekdayand the day of the week displayed should be the current day and date. These values can be used, or you can specify a day and a date other than the current date. P: PATCH PRODOS - Once a valid day and date have been entered, and the date look up table hasup table and displays it in the lower left corner of the screen in both hexadecimal and decimal format. N: SET A DATE - This command will allow you to set a date and day of the week for the date look up table. If you have a clock card installed, the date e calculation date is the day of the week followed by the date that ProDATE will use to create the date look up table. If you have a clock card, ProDATE will use the current date and day of the week. C: CREATE TABLE: This command calculates the date look ble as the years go by. This utility is version specific to our ProDOS. To use ProDATE set a valid date, day of the week for the date, and specify the location of the ProDOS system file. Then create the date table and patch ProDOS.
