As an example, suppose you print a database report to disk in which each entry is a letter of the alphabet. Printing the report in normal "labels" style fasistworks, and will explain common problems and their solutions, and include notification of bugs, improvements, etc. LISTWORKS PROGRAM: INTRODUCTION Listworks prints a list of information in multiple columns on your printer. The source of the informatios documentation is a highly condensed version of (and not a replacement for) the Listworks Tutorial, which you will receive by return mail when you register yourself as a Listworks user. The Tutorial contains complete information on all aspects of using L$&'()*+,-./0123in multiple columns on your printer. Listworks is distributed as a shareware program. Information regarding your registration as a Listworks user is available from the Listworks Startup menu, which is the first thing to appear when you run Listworks. (yes, these are short little pages...) Using Listworks to print a three column page will produce: A E I Page 1 B F J C G K D H L M Q U Page 2 N R V etc... Note how the alphabetical sequence is maintained. AppleWorks and other database programs do not have this multi-column printing capability. Listworks is great for all types of list printouts, like t the disk operating system files are not there. The PRODOS and BASIC.SYSTEM files should be copied from your ProDos or System Utilities disk onto your working copy of Listworks. As an alternative, you can enter BASIC from ProDOS and enter RUN STARTUP. Tn situations such as this. Remember to keep a copy of Listworks without these files as your backup copy and to make copies of Listworks to give to your friends and acquaintances. If your Listworks disk won't boot and run by itself, it is probably becausehird parties or through electronic bulletin boards, it will not contain the ProDOS operating system files. However, every Apple IIe, IIc, and IIgs owner receives these files on the ProDos or System Utilities disk that comes with their computer, for use i delete the ProDOS and BASIC.SYSTEM files before giving a copy of Listworks to anyone else because the ProDOS license from Apple Computer, Inc applies only to the original purchaser. When Listworks is distributed as shareware, either by giving copies to te ProDOS and BASIC.SYSTEM files already on the disk. You can tell by booting the Listworks disk - if the program runs you know the operating system is there. In this situation you are free to make backup copies of the entire Listworks disk, but you shouldt to locate the LISTWORKS directory. (Note: if you don't understand this, don't worry; just ignore it and copy the files onto a floppy disk with the volume name LISTWORKS). You may have purchased a copy of Listworks that already has a licensed copy of thprogram will run automatically when you boot the Listworks disk. If you want to, you can copy the all the Listworks files to a directory on ram disk, hard disk, etc. Make sure the files are located in a directory named LISTWORKS and that the prefix is seS may have been deleted to save space. They will be re-created as Listworks runs. In addition, your Listworks disk will need the disk operating system files PRODOS and BASIC.SYSTEM if you want Listworks to be a "startup" disk where the Listworks startup ntains the following files: STARTUP, LWKS.PGM.1, LWKS.PGM.2, PRINTER.SETUP, TICKTOCK, TICKTOCK.VARS, CRUNCHER, SAMPLE.ASCII, VARIABLES, PRINTER.VARS, LW.PGM.1.VARS, and LISTWORKS.DOC. Note that the variable files TICKTOCK.VARS, VARIABLES, and LW.PGM.1.VARWorks data base, which appears as you proceed to print a report format. Any data base program that will print out an ASCII text file on disk can be used to create the file that Listworks reads. MAKING LISTWORKS A STARTUP DISK A complete Listworks disk co you do it will not be able to run. Instead, make a backup copy of Listworks for security. Before running the Listworks program, you must have saved a data base report as an ASCII text file on a ProDOS format disk. This is one of the options in the Appleesoft BASIC and operates under the ProDOS(TM) disk operating system. Although Listworks won't alter the text file it reads, it does store program information in various files on the Listworks disk. Do not put a write protect tab on the Listworks disk; ifRKS OPERATION Listworks reads a sequential ASCII text file from disk, calculates the page setup using parameters you specify, then prints the information on your printer. This cycle is repeated for each page that is printed. Listworks is written in Applhree-across mailing labels, where you want to get more information on a page of paper than a regular "labels" style report allows. Listworks maintains the column oriented (top to bottom) sequence so that alphabetical or numeric lists read properly. LISTWOhe Listworks program does not set the serial ports on the IIc. CHANGING THE PRINTER SETUP Listworks must be set to work with your own printer. Run Listworks and look to see what printer is listed when the first screen appears in the actual Listworks program. If it is not a printer compatible with your own printer, you will need to go back to the startup menu and choose the "Change the Printer Setup" option. If your printer (or a compatible printer) is not listed as one of the options in the printer setu (STANDARD)":"(2) SPECIFY PATHNAME TO LOCATE DIRECTORY";:" (FOR HARD/RAM DISK USERS)" S$"/LISTWORKS/":T$"PRINTER.VARS" :"YOUR CHOICE?... Happy Listworking! * * * * ProDOS is a co" and the Name that begins the second "label". Unfortunately, Listworks doesn't know that you want the City, State, and Zip combined to make up one entry, and would print them on separate rows. There are two Solutions, one using AppleWorks, the other withts the ASCII file to disk, it will insert a carriage return between the entry in each category. This means that there will be a carriage return between City and State, just as there is one between Name and Address and between the Zip from the first "labels for City, State, and Zip. In setting up your "labels" style report to print mailing labels, you would arrange the five categories: Name Address City State Zip But there is a Problem. When AppleWorks prinp program, you will need to set up a custom printer using the custom printer setup option.
