After experiencing this project, teachers see the possibilities; of networking with other teach Skills (continued) ------------------------------------ -> Improving Teacher Skills Much has been said regarding the unfortunate isolation facing the teacher of today. Only truly extraordinary teachers seem to be able to fight the impossible obormation. Some students become quite knowledgeble in telecommunications. "The Santa Claus Letters Page 4 FrEdMail Telelesson Project Improving Student and Teachern video interviews taken after they have completed the project, students state that they feel more comfortable using the computer keyboard and the word-processing program. They are also intrigued and interested in learning about electronic transfer of infnts seem automatically to slide into so effortlessly. They want to help each other, to compare what they have written with what others in the class have done. The desire to cooperate is obvious, natural and strong. Technically Ietters. They even get quite a bit of practice reading, because they want to read each others letters and compare the contents. Socially One of the most noteworthy results of this project, is the cooperative mode that the stude letter to Santa to be "just right", and secondary students feel such a high degree of responsibility to the task that they also want their work to be their best. Students gladly take part in the process of writing, editing, revising and perfecting their ls the same one, and generally helping each other toward a common goal that they believe is important. -> Improving Student Skills Academically The exercise is one that strengthens students writing. Elementary students want theirelecommunications. Besides, it is FUN! Excitement and fun? I certainly get excited seeing my students practically fighting over the dictionaries ("Santa does not misspell words!"), working together to be sure that they all say that their favorite cookie iur partner school is on-the-ball, the turnaround time is shorter, which increases student interest. You could do the whole project using the postal service, but then you and your students wouldn't have learned as much about the new and exciting world of t suggestions, while the modem and phone line is an absolute necessity. To compose the letters: - 1 Computer for every 3-4 students * - FrEdWriter Word Processing program for each computer - Floppy disks to save the letters To Transfer the letters: - 1 Hayes or Hayes compatible Modem plugged in one of the computers, plus any necessary cables and peripheral cards - Access to a phone line with modular connection + - FrEdSender, Talk-is-Cheap or some other telecommunications teacher with students that want to write back as Santa. You need an elementary teacher with a class of students to pair up with. If you do not have a partner school, send a message to: SDUSD!DCOWICK and one will be found for yst to you. 2) GET A PARTNER SCHOOL If you are an elementary teacher and your students want to write to Santa, you need a teacher with a class of secondary students to do this project with you. The same is true if you are a secondary letin boards if you do not already have an account with one. NOTE: The phone numbers of the boards are listed on the FrEdMail Network Map. FrEdSender was created specifically to be used with the FrEdMail Computer software that is compatible with your computer and modem - 1 Printer (minimum) to print the letters out - Ribbons and paper for the printer * Many teachers across the nation use and are familiar with the FrEdWriter word processing progrou. Schools participating this year will be writing in Spanish, French and English. 3) USE FrEdWriter FOR THIS PROJECT Any computer and any word processing program, theoretically, may be used for this lesson - IF you know how to convert files to something that the FrEdMail Network boards will understand. However, as mentioned before, FrEdWriter files do not have to be changed in any way to be sent electronically. A FrEd file is ready to be sent, just as it is. , signed their full names and saved the letters to disk. All of their letters are saved on one or more disks, right? Now you need to merge all the letters into one file. Here is how to do it. EXAMPLE: Let's say that you have flaus Letters Page 9 FrEdMail Telelesson Project 8) PREPARE THE LETTERS FOR SENDING - Merging Files [Do this when you are alone!] Your students have written their lettersARGE letter at their elbow, and they slowly, painstakingly typed in the letters. Letters produced in the third way are the most challenging and entertaining for the secondary students to answer, as you can imagine. "The Santa Chose large pieces of paper used in elementary. One teacher I know even had her students spell the words and she wrote them EXACTLY in the phonetic way her students spelled. Then the children sat at the keyboard with their LAnother method is to arrange to have older students come in and type the letters. -> Still another way to go about it is to have students dictate their letters to Santa to you. As they dictate, you write out what they say on t letter writing they should be ready for the real thing. I have talked to elementary teachers and there are different ways to put this together. -> One way is to have your children dictate their letters to you as you type. -> e to bring everything the child has listed, or how to encourage young children to be good for the sake of being good. 7) ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WRITE TO SANTA Now that your students have talked about writing to Santa and practiced his will want to do some prewriting exercises with their students. Students should try to think like Santa, describe the North Pole, explain what it is like to work with reindeer, etc. Hold class discussions on how it is not fair to promison and is named "PROMPTS.ELEM" on this disk. The one for secondary students is "PROMPTS.JR.SR". [NOTE: BEFORE printing the prompted files out, set "Print Prompts" on FrEdWriter Print menu to YES.] Secondary teachers involved in t.) 6) DO SOME PREWRITING ACTIVITIES WITH YOUR CLASS After describing the lesson to your students, use one of the prewriting exercises on this disk or one of your own. The exercise for elementary students is a prompted writing lessfor sending the last letters) - Agree on the number of students participating (This is a popular project. Take a tip from the secondary teacher that ended up having her students answer over 200 letters instead of the planned 30tice, Practice! "The Santa Claus Letters Page 8 FrEdMail Telelesson Project 5) SET GUIDELINES WITH YOUR PARTNER CLASS - Agree on a timeline (Especially set a deadline this procedure BEFORE you begin this with your class. Write a practice letter to Santa, save it on disk, and send it as an Email (Electronic Mail) attached file to the other teacher. Practice, Prac 4) PRACTICE SENDING AND RECEIVING FILES WITH YOUR PARTNER The number one task that you will be doing during this project is sending the letters back and forth. It is absolutely imperative that you have some experience withiles called Bobby, Johnny, Billy, Suzie, Alice and Heather. You want to make these 6 files into one file. - Load the file named Bobby - Once it is onscreen, type " .page " at the end of the file, as far left as is possible. Typing .page tells the printer to start a new page. - Press return a few times to get some space between letters - Load the file named Johnny - You will be prompted at the bottom of the screen, LLOW-UP Finally, when it is all over, get together with teachers in your area that participated in the project and meet for a TGIF so that you can debrief and brainstorm. Meet the faces behind the electronic names that you have been cshare the excitement! i) Don't try to do letters for everyone in the entire school! j) Get the parents and administrators involved or at least make sure they know about what the excitement is all about. 13) EVALUATION/FOng themselves. -> f) Put the letters to and from Santa on a bulletin board. -> g) Staple the to and from letters together and send them home with the elementary students. -> h) Put up a display in a hall so the rest of the school can nts as they work on the letters and send captioned copies to your partner school. -> e) Make a video of the students at the various stages. The elementary students could send their video to Santa (the secondary students) introducienty of time when planning the deadlines c) Send a page break between each letter so that when they are printed out, there is one letter per sheet (".page" at the left column does this in FrEdWriter) -> d) Take pictures of your studetters from a classroom are put together into one file, using the "merge" feature of FrEdWriter, and then sent as a file attached to an Email message from the teacher at one school to the teacher at the other school. b) Allow plrmed my heart to hear from so many of you. Have a wonderful Holiday! HO HO HO! love, Santa Claus " Then attach the file of letters from Santa to the message. 12) SPECIAL TIPS AND REMINDERS a) Le type a message to the teacher at your partner school. It might be nice to type a message like: " Ho Ho Ho! It was so nice to get all those wonderful letters from Mrs. Jones class down there in California! It wa8. "The Santa Claus Letters Page 10 FrEdMail Telelesson Project 11) SECONDARY TEACHERS SEND THE LETTERS FROM SANTA Call your FrEdMail board, go into the Email section andter to Santa per page. Pass out the letters to your class, have them write a letter FROM Santa and save the letters. To send the letters from Santa back to the elementary school, merge the letters into one file as explained in step number Y TEACHERS RECEIVE THE LETTERS After receiving the file from the elementary students and saving the file to disk, it is a good idea to print out the letters. If a " . page " was typed at the end of each letter, you should have one letrd you have an account on, go into the Email section and type the teacher at your partner school a brief message stating that the letters are attached. Then follow the onscreen procedures for attaching the file to the message. 10) SECONDARtinue the process, until you have merged all 6 of the files onscreen. - When all of the files are onscreen, SAVE them all together under a new name 9) ELEMENTARY TEACHER SEND THE LETTERS Call whichever FrEdMail Boa "You are about to MERGE a new file from disk with the text already in memory. DO YOU WANT TO DO THIS? (Y/N) " - Type Y for yes and Johnny's file is now at the end of Bobby's - Conooperating with for the last few weeks. You may come up with a new idea for your next televenture. "The Santa Claus Letters Page 11 FrEdMail Telelesson Project 14) A VARIATION ON THE SANTA CLAUS LETTER EXCHANGE - Santa, Inc Steve Pinney, who runs "The Writing Network" for the Newport Mesa Unified School District in California, has added a twist to the project. Also included in "TEACHERS.LOG" are messages the coordinator sent to help guide participating teachers through technical problems. Reading these messages will give you a better feel for what happens FrEdMail Telelesson Project 17) "TEACHERS.LOG" The messages that fly back and forth between teachers are a very interesting part of this experience. Load the file titled "TEACHERS.LOG" and scan through the messages teachers K Some of the letters that have been written to and from Santa by students on the FrEdMail Network are on this disk under the file "SAMPLES".
